Apple Is the Flavour Chains Added to Fall Menus in 2026

Every major chain still sells pumpkin, but in 2026 the flavour they added is apple. McDonald's fall coffee is Caramel Apple Pie with no pumpkin drink beside it, Wendy's launched an Apple Crumble Frosty Fusion explicitly pitched 'beyond pumpkin spice', Krispy Kreme added an Apple Crisp Latte, Taco Bell brought back the Caramel Apple Empanada, and Starbucks' one new fall concept is a cider-inspired chai. Starbucks' own Apple Crisp drinks, meanwhile, are not on its 2026 lineup.

  • McDonald's: Caramel Apple Pie Frappe, Iced Coffee and Latte — and no pumpkin spice coffee promoted this year
  • Wendy's: Apple Crumble Frosty Fusion, launched August 3, introduced as fall flavour 'beyond pumpkin spice'
  • Krispy Kreme: new Apple Crisp Latte in the August 11 autumn collection, where only two of six items are pumpkin
  • Taco Bell: Caramel Apple Empanada back August 20 at $2.99
  • Starbucks: the one new fall drink concept is the Chaider, which the company describes as cider-inspired
  • Starbucks' Apple Crisp drinks are absent from its published 2026 fall lineup
  • Pumpkin has not gone anywhere — every one of these chains still sells it

What it is

A cluster of apple-flavoured additions to US chain menus for fall 2026, arriving within three weeks of each other and in every case alongside — not instead of — the chain's existing pumpkin range. It covers coffee (McDonald's Caramel Apple Pie line, Krispy Kreme's Apple Crisp Latte, Starbucks' cider-inspired Chaider), dessert (Wendy's Apple Crumble Frosty Fusion) and food (Taco Bell's returning Caramel Apple Empanada). It is not a consumer trend that chains responded to; it is a set of independent product decisions that landed at the same time.

Why it’s trending now

Pumpkin spice no longer differentiates anyone. Every chain runs it, which means it grows the season without winning any individual chain a customer, and the chains have started saying so out loud — Wendy's introduced its 2026 fall dessert as a taste of fall "beyond pumpkin spice" in its own press release. Apple is the natural second flavour because it is already understood as autumnal and it translates cleanly into the formats chains sell: pie, crumble, crisp and cider all map onto a syrup, a doughnut, a Frosty or a latte without needing to teach anyone anything. Three weeks in August 2026 produced apple items at McDonald's, Wendy's, Krispy Kreme, Taco Bell and Starbucks, and in McDonald's case the apple drink replaced the pumpkin one entirely.

What set it off

No single event set this off, and none is invented here. The observable trigger is competitive: within three weeks in August 2026, five chains published fall lineups containing apple items, and one of them stated in its own release that the product was aimed at customers looking past pumpkin spice.

Where it came from

Apple is not new as a chain fall flavour. Starbucks ran Apple Crisp drinks as recently as October 2025, and Taco Bell's Caramel Apple Empanada has come back through two consecutive Decades menus. What is new in 2026 is the concentration: apple appearing as the featured or only new fall flavour at several chains at once rather than as a supporting item behind pumpkin.

Variations

  • Caramel apple pie (McDonald's coffee line)
  • Apple crumble (Wendy's Frosty Fusion)
  • Apple crisp (Krispy Kreme latte; Starbucks' absent macchiato)
  • Caramel apple (Taco Bell empanada)
  • Cider-inspired (Starbucks Chaider)

Every apple item confirmed for fall 2026

McDonald's. The fall McCafe flavour is Caramel Apple Pie, across the Frappe, Iced Coffee and Latte. The company describes it as apple pie crumble, salted caramel flavoured whipped topping and caramel apple pie flavoured syrup. Its promoted lineup lists no pumpkin spice drink at all.

Wendy's. The Apple Crumble Frosty Fusion, out August 3: a Vanilla Frosty blended with spiced apple syrup and oat crumbles.

Krispy Kreme. A new Apple Crisp Latte joined the Autumn Seasonal Collection on August 11 — a latte with apple crisp syrup, whipped cream, caramel drizzle and graham flavoured topping. It sits next to a returning Pumpkin Spice Latte, and the doughnut side of that collection is maple, mocha, Biscoff and one pumpkin cake doughnut.

Taco Bell. The Caramel Apple Empanada returned on August 20 at $2.99, as part of the 2016-themed Decades menu.

Starbucks. The one genuinely new drink concept on the August 25 fall menu is the Chaider, which Starbucks describes as a cosy twist on chai delivering cider-inspired flavours including cinnamon and sweet spice.

The line Wendy's put in its own press release

Chains rarely position a product against a category they also sell. Wendy's did. Its release describes the Apple Crumble Frosty Fusion as being "for those craving a sweet taste of fall beyond pumpkin spice."

That is a marketing line, not data, and it should be read as one. But it is the clearest statement any of these companies has made about what the apple push is for: not replacing pumpkin, but selling to the people who are done with it. McDonald's made the same choice without commenting on it, by simply not putting a pumpkin coffee on the board.

The odd one out is Starbucks, which dropped its apple drinks

Starbucks has the best-known apple products in the category — the Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato and its iced counterpart. Neither appears in the fall lineup Starbucks published on August 3 for the August 25 launch. That lineup is pumpkin, pecan, banana bread and the new Chaider.

Starbucks has not published a statement explaining the absence, and this page does not invent one. It is worth being precise about what "absent" means here: an item that is not on an announced seasonal lineup has not been discontinued, and Starbucks has said nothing either way.

There is also precedent for it arriving late. In 2025 Starbucks announced the Apple Crisp drinks in a separate release, bringing them back on October 9 "for a very limited time while supplies last" rather than with the fall menu. That is a reason to hold off on concluding anything, not a reason to expect a repeat.

The result for now is that the chain most associated with an apple fall drink is the one chain without one on its menu, while four others added apple items in the same three weeks.

Why apple, and why this year

Pumpkin spice has a structural problem for a chain: everybody has it, so it cannot differentiate anybody. It brings people into the season and then every competitor offers the same thing. A chain that wants a reason for you to choose it over the one across the street needs a second flavour, and apple is the obvious candidate — it is already understood as autumnal, it maps onto desserts people know (pie, crumble, crisp, cider), and it works in both a coffee and a dessert format.

That is why the 2026 pattern is additive rather than a replacement. Not one of these chains dropped pumpkin to make room. Krispy Kreme's release is headlined "Pumpkin Spice is Back!" and then spends most of its length on maple, mocha, Biscoff and apple. McDonald's is the only one that went apple instead of pumpkin rather than apple as well as pumpkin, and it did so without saying why.

Common questions

Does McDonald's have a Pumpkin Spice Latte in 2026?
Its promoted fall coffee lineup is Caramel Apple Pie — a Frappe, Iced Coffee and Latte — and lists no pumpkin spice drink. McDonald's has not published a statement about the absence.
Is Starbucks selling Apple Crisp drinks this fall?
They are not on the fall lineup Starbucks announced on August 3 for the August 25 launch. The company has not said whether they are discontinued or simply not in the opening lineup — in 2025 they were added after the initial announcement.
Which chains have apple items for fall 2026?
McDonald's (Caramel Apple Pie coffees), Wendy's (Apple Crumble Frosty Fusion), Krispy Kreme (Apple Crisp Latte), Taco Bell (Caramel Apple Empanada) and Starbucks (the cider-inspired Chaider).
Is pumpkin spice being discontinued?
No. Every chain named here except McDonald's still has pumpkin items on its 2026 fall menu, and Krispy Kreme's autumn announcement is headlined on pumpkin's return.
