What was announced

Chipotle announced from Newport Beach on October 13, 2026 a "limited-edition, three-foot-wide, 170-liter version of its iconic takeout bag to spotlight Family Meals", its digital-exclusive group offering for four to six people. Beginning that day, U.S. Rewards members who purchase a Family Meal through the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com are automatically entered in a multi-week sweepstakes to win one, with winners drawn weekly; Chipotle's promotion page puts the number at 2,000 bags a week for four weeks. The official rules set the sweepstakes period as October 13, 2026 to 11:59 p.m. PT on November 10, 2026, state that no purchase is necessary, and limit entry to residents of the 50 U.S. states and D.C. aged 13 and over. The release also records, in passing, that Family Meals were "previously known as Build-Your-Own Chipotle", and repeats Chipotle's "less than $10 per person" framing for them.

Why it matters

Three things on this page are not in the coverage that followed the announcement: the bag cannot be bought at all, the sweepstakes has a hard close on November 10, and Chipotle's "less than $10 per person" figure carries footnoted conditions — cheapest protein, largest group, no extras — that the headline number does not. The release also quietly renames Build-Your-Own Chipotle to Family Meals, a change Chipotle's own promotion page has not yet made.

How the bag is actually obtained

The bag is not a menu item and not merchandise for sale. Chipotle says Rewards members in the U.S. get "the chance to win a Big Ass Chipotle Bag through a multi-week digital sweepstakes", with winners drawn each week from members who buy a Family Meal through the Chipotle app or Chipotle.com.

Chipotle's own promotion page puts numbers on it: "one of 2,000 bags given away each week for four weeks". That is 8,000 bags in total across the period, which is the figure the press release does not state.

The official rules in the release's footnote are worth reading against the marketing, because they say something different in two places. The sweepstakes period runs from 12:01 a.m. PT on October 13, 2026 to 11:59 p.m. PT on November 10, 2026. Entry is open to legal residents of the 50 U.S. states and D.C. aged 13 and over. And the rules open with "NO PURCHASE NECESSARY", directing entrants to chipotle.com/giveaway for "free entry method" details — even though every piece of the promotion around it is framed as buying a Family Meal to be entered automatically.

What the bag is, by the numbers Chipotle published

Chipotle describes the Big Ass Chipotle Bag as "a larger-than-life take on a brand staple, created to celebrate Family Meals". The dimensions it gives are 36 inches wide, 24 inches tall and 12 inches deep, with a 170-litre capacity, which Chipotle calls "the biggest bag in Chipotle history".

Fernando Machado, Chipotle's chief brand officer, is quoted in the release: "A Big Ass Meal deserves a Big Ass Bag. We took one of the most recognizable parts of the Chipotle experience, gave it an outsized upgrade, and created something that's impossible to miss." The bag anchors a national advertising campaign, Chipotle's first major work with the agency GUT.

The quieter news: Build-Your-Own Chipotle is now Family Meals — on one page of two

Buried in the release is a menu-naming change that was never announced on its own. Describing the group offering, Chipotle writes: "Previously known as Build-Your-Own Chipotle, Family Meals give groups everything they need to build their own Chipotle entrees."

The rename has not reached Chipotle's own promotion page. As of October 28, 2026, the FAQ on chipotle.com/bab — the page the release links to for ordering — still uses the old name throughout, answering "How many people does Build Your Own Chipotle feed?" and "How much is Build Your Own Chipotle?" rather than the new one. Both names therefore describe the same thing right now, and someone searching either term is looking for the same four-to-six-person order.

Stephanie Perdue, senior vice president of brand marketing, frames the offering this way in the release: "With enough food to serve four to six people, it's a convenient option for dinner, game days and all the moments when everyone wants something a little different." Family Meals are digital-only, ordered through the app, Chipotle.com or Chipotle.ca, with pickup Chipotle says is available in as few as 10 minutes.

The "less than $10 per person" figure, and the conditions on it

The release states that "at less than $10 per person, Family Meals offer abundant portions with convenient pickup or delivery". That figure is Chipotle's own, so it belongs on this page — but the conditions attached to it appear only in the footnote on Chipotle's promotion page, and they narrow it considerably.

In Chipotle's words: "Less than $10 is based on chicken order for a group size of at least six. Excludes extra charges such as extra guacamole or queso blanco, sides, drinks and taxes. Delivery pricing is higher and fees apply."

So the figure assumes the cheapest protein, the largest group the meal serves, and none of the add-ons most orders include. Chipotle has published no fixed dollar price for a Family Meal itself, and prices vary by location, so this page carries the per-person framing with its conditions rather than a headline price.

The date that matters

There is one hard deadline in the whole promotion: entries close at 11:59 p.m. PT on November 10, 2026. After that the weekly draws are over, and Chipotle has announced nothing about the bag being sold, reissued or offered again.

This page is set to be re-checked on November 10. If Chipotle extends the sweepstakes, names the total number of winners, or puts the bag on sale, that will be added here with the source that said so.
